What is locksnapping?

You may of heard of “cylinder snapping” or “lock snapping“. Lock snapping is a very common method used by burglars to break into a property that has a euro cylinder lock, lock snapping requires no skill or training by the thief to snap the lock.

Euro cylinders that are prone to lock snapping are found on almost all domestic houses that have UPVC doors, although a significant number of composite & aluminium doors use them too, most UPVC doors are usually fitted with a base line euro cylinder that is prone to snap

How long does it take?

It can take as little as 1 minute for a theif to snap your lock and enter your property,
Requires only ordinary tools anyone can obtain with no knowledge of locksmithing

How common is locksnapping?

Locksnapping is used in almost 50% of all burglaries, thief’s commonly look out for euro cylinders without the 3 star rating before they attempt to snap and break into a property

How secure are my locks?

The first thing to know is you may see anti-snap locks referred to as snap-proof, snap resistant or snap secure.

Is your euro cylinder lock old? – If the euro lock cylinder on your door was fitted before 2011 it almost certainly has not been tested for lock snapping so is not anti-snap.

Have a new lock cylinder fitted to your door?  A new euro lock cylinder could be also be anti snap as some locksmiths tend to use the cheaper option when it comes to stock, our standard at O B double glazing repairs is we give customers the option for a like for like cylinder or upgrade, making sure you know the risks of standard euro cylinders

Does Lock have the 3 Star Kitemark Logo?

If your lock has the 3-Star Kitemark Logo on it, this indicates the lock is tested against lock snapping.

The Kitemark logo can be found anywhere on the lock; it is usually found on either, the front or side of the euro cylinder.

Thief’s look out for this logo, therefore adding as a deterrent as most thief’s know this locks are impenetrable

Having these cylinders guarantee prevention of snapping the lock and therefore thief’s entering your properties

We have fitted many of these cylinders after the burglary has taken place, if my customers had upgraded there locks before It was to late, said burglaries wouldn’t have taken place
